Orlistat is a lipase inhibitor used together with a reduced-calorie diet for weight management in appropriate patients.
It works by reducing the activity of enzymes that break down dietary fat in the digestive tract. This decreases the absorption of some of the fat consumed in a meal, with the unabsorbed fat eliminated through the digestive system.
Orlistat should be used only as directed by a healthcare professional and as part of an appropriate diet and weight-management program. It can cause gastrointestinal side effects, particularly when meals contain higher amounts of dietary fat.
