Ciprofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections.
It works by inhibiting bacterial enzymes called DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are necessary for bacterial DNA replication and repair. This action prevents susceptible bacteria from multiplying.
Ciprofloxacin should be used only when prescribed by a healthcare professional for an appropriate bacterial infection. It does not treat viral infections such as common colds or influenza. Fluoroquinolone antibiotics can cause serious adverse effects, including tendon injury and certain nervous-system and cardiovascular effects.
