Indomethacin is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to relieve pain and inflammation associated with selected inflammatory and musculoskeletal conditions, including certain forms of arthritis and acute gout.
It works by inhibiting cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, reducing the production of prostaglandins involved in pain, swelling, and inflammation. The sustained-release formulation is designed to release the medicine over an extended period.
Indomethacin should be used only when prescribed by a healthcare professional and at the lowest effective dose for the shortest appropriate duration. NSAIDs may cause serious gastrointestinal bleeding, ulcers, kidney problems, cardiovascular events, and allergic reactions. Avoid combining it with other NSAIDs unless specifically directed by a healthcare professional. Seek urgent medical attention for black stools, vomiting blood, chest pain, severe stomach pain, or breathing difficulties.
