Spironolactone is a potassium-sparing diuretic and aldosterone antagonist. It works by blocking the effects of aldosterone, helping the body remove excess sodium and water while reducing potassium loss.
Spironolactone is used in the treatment of conditions such as fluid retention associated with certain heart, liver, or kidney disorders and elevated blood pressure. It may also be prescribed for other conditions where aldosterone blockade is beneficial.
