Tapentadol is an opioid analgesic used for the management of severe pain when treatment with an opioid is appropriate. The extended-release formulation is designed to provide prolonged pain relief over an extended period.
Tapentadol works primarily through two mechanisms: it activates opioid receptors involved in pain control and also inhibits the reuptake of norepinephrine, helping reduce the transmission of pain signals.
Tapentadol extended release should be used only as directed by a healthcare professional. It can cause drowsiness, respiratory depression, dependence, and other serious adverse effects. It should not be combined with alcohol or other medicines that can dangerously slow breathing unless specifically directed by a healthcare professional.
