Nitrofurantoin is an antibacterial medicine used to treat certain uncomplicated urinary tract infections, particularly infections involving the bladder caused by susceptible bacteria.
It works by damaging bacterial proteins, DNA, and other essential cellular components. This interferes with bacterial growth and survival. Nitrofurantoin achieves high concentrations in urine, helping target susceptible bacteria in the urinary tract.
Nitrofurantoin should be used only when prescribed by a healthcare professional for an appropriate bacterial urinary infection. The choice of formulation, dose, and treatment duration depends on the patient and kidney function. It is not appropriate for every type of urinary infection or for all patients with impaired kidney function. Seek medical attention for breathing problems, persistent cough, severe diarrhea, jaundice, or signs of nerve damage.
